Who Had the Better Army: Rome or Sparta?

📝 Classical Civilisation paragraph, Year 11. Teacher feedback: “An excellent paragraph, well done. Using a source in your evidence would help elevate this even further.”

One way in which the two armies differed was their armour and equipment. The Spartans wore solid bronze cuirasses, while the Roman legionaries wore iron chest plates (loricae segmentatae) which consisted of overlapping strips of metal connected from the inside with leather. The Spartan cuirass offered excellent protection, but was very heavy and also very difficult to move in. The Roman chest plate, however, was much more flexible due to the overlapping metal plates. They were also much lighter than the Spartans’. Overall, this suggests that the Romans had better, more efficient armour because it was much lighter and more flexible, which made it easier for the soldiers to wear for long periods of time.
